NaTakallam – meaning “We Speak” in Arabic – connects refugees and conflict-affected individuals with paid, remote work opportunities in the language sector. As an award-wining, market-based response to global displacement, NaTakallam operates at the intersection of the digital economy, forced migration, and the growing global demand for language services.

Since 2015, we’ve helped 850+ displaced professionals earn $4.5 million — while building bridges between communities worldwide.

Today, a sudden shift in the global aid landscape has created a critical short-term funding gap.

Over the next 100 days, we’re seeking your communal support to help hundreds of refugee and conflict-affected tutors, translators and cultural storytelling facilitators who rely on the steady work they deliver to individuals and clients worlwide through NaTakallam.

Ghaith, a Syrian refugee in Lebanon, couldn’t work legally for years. Through NaTakallam, he taught Arabic to hundreds of students – one of whom helped him resettle in Italy, where he now works as a journalist.

Nidaa, from Lebanon, lives in a country facing deep economic collapse. With her master’s focused on language and scientific innovation, she calls herself a “career refugee.” NaTakallam gave her paid work, the ability to put her degree to use – and even helped her raise the funds for a laptop to finish her thesis.

Sayed, from Afghanistan, twice fled the Taliban. Teaching Farsi with NaTakallam gave him income and connection – and eventually helped him find a safe new home.

Marianela left Venezuela amid political unrest and personal risk due to her involvement in protests. Her five-day escape included sleeping on sidewalks and falling ill in an airport infirmary. After settling in Costa Rica, she became NaTakallam’s first Spanish teacher and also contributes as a translator. For Marianela, teaching is more than a job – it’s a space for connection where she takes great pride in her students’ progress.

Shahd, from Gaza, had her education interrupted by war. Her NaTakallam students helped crowdfund her escape. Today she’s studying in the U.S., building a future once out of reach.

For nearly a decade, we’ve run a sustainable, earned-income model – funded mainly through client work with universities, companies, and nonprofits.

But in 2025, major aid cuts forced several of our partners to pause or end programs as well as the sudden loss of grant funding. This has put significant pressure on our team and cash flow, and threatens a temporary shortfall in work for our tutors and translators – meaning they could lose income they’ve worked hard to build – at a moment when it’s needed most.

Now, we’re reaching out to our community of for help.

We want to emphasize that we are still fully operational, delivering services to clients and making a positive impact on our refugee freelancers.

The landscape of international funding donors has changed. But our mission to flip the script on humanitarian aid by providing a market-based solution remains the same.

We are hopeful that collective donations, even small amounts, from our many will help us navigate this phase.
